Brewers fall to Cubs on Opening Day

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Chicago Cubs in Opening Day play on March 30th, 2023. In fact, it was a shutout. What a way to start the season. It can only go up from here, right? An overview of the game includes; the first MLB pitch clock violation, Brice Turang and Gus Varland making their MLB debut for the Brewers, and the Brewers being shut out by the Cubs.
During Spring Training, the Brewers went 12-15 in 2023. The Cubs finished in the Cactus League in third place with a 17-12 record.
Some notable statistics from Spring Training 2023 for the Milwaukee Brewers are:
-Yelich with an OBP of .293 with 3 walks, 9 hits, and 38 at bats. -Turang with an OBP of .347 with 4 walks, 13 hits, and 45 at bats.
-Varland who pitched in 8 games, with an ERA of 4.15, 17 strikeouts, and 1 walk.
Some notable statistics from Spring Training 2023 for the Chicago Cubs are:
-Stroman who pitches in 3 games, with an ERA of 0.90, 10 strikeouts, and 3 walks.
Starting in the 2023 Major League Baseball season, there are new rules. One being the pitch clock. The new rule states that “pitchers will have 15 seconds to throw a pitch with the bases empty and 20 seconds with a runner on base”. Marcus Stroman of the Cubs spent too much time in the 3rd inning, and the umpire called a pitch clock violation. This resulted in Christian Yelich getting a ball added to the count. Yelich ended up being walked by Stroman.
In the top of the 3rd inning, Brewers bats were the most active when rookie, Brice Turang hit an infield single. Christian Yelich was then walked due to the pitch clock violation, mentioned earlier, and Willy Adames was also walked. This loaded the bases for Rowdy Tellez with one out. Last season, Tellez had 89 runs batted in. The inning ended up ending in a double play to Nico Hoerner of the Cubs.
Corbin Burnes started the game and gave up four earned runs in five innings. Burnes has started five games for spring training in 2023 for the Brewers. Corbin Burnes has been named the Brewers Pitcher of the Year for two years in a row (2021 and 2022). He has also been named the National League All-Star for the same two years.
Gus Varland made his MLB debut in this game and got his first Major League strikeout to close out the game. Before coming to Milwaukee, Varland was in Los Angeles with the Dodgers and was invited to Spring Training in 2021. He was then placed with the Tulsa Drillers, which are the Double-A affiliate for the Dodgers. Varland was eventually sent to the Brewers on waivers. Opening Day 2023 was Varland's first Major League debut.
